Make a small change with a big difference this fall by making REAL fruit snacks!

In this recipe, we take all the fruit and snack food in our house and make smiling faces that will get your family and friends smiling too! To do this, I went to the store for all WIC approved fruits, veggies, and other finger foods. Choosing to make a snack out of fresh ingredients is a great small change to make over processed, sugary snacks. Plus, creating them is fun for the whole family!

This little project requires no baking or cooking. All I used was a plastic knife and a plate, and spent about half an hour.

Fruit Face Frankensteins can be made in endless combinations, as long as you have these three categories of foods:

1. Face Bace (apple, pear, anything round)

2. Decorating parts of varying small size (berries, cheese, raisins, seeds…)

3. Sticky Stuff (peanut butter, yogurt, honey…)

  1. Cut up your face base fruit into half or quarters. This way they can either sit up at an angle or be flat on the plate. Picking different colors of bases gives your display more dimension.
  1. Carve out the mouths! Smiling, frowning, singing, etc. – the more variety the better. Make them large so you have enough room for any teeth or tongues you want.

Now decorate! Dismember your snacks into eyes, noses, teeth, eyebrows, anything! I filled some of my mouths with peanut butter or yogurt (the thicker the yogurt the better) to make teeth hang from the roof of their mouths. To make my teeth, I used cheese cut into triangles. In hindsight, I only wish I had gotten other colors besides red, I could have gone with blackberries, blueberries, grapes, etc. Decoration is the best time to involve kids too. They can arrange the faces after you cut the mouths.

Here are my results! I had so much fun dreaming these up and putting them together. This makes a healthy treat that can use a little bit of everything left over in your kitchen. Comment down below what you were able to make with a small change that makes a big difference!
